What is Amoxil Amoxicillin?

Amoxil (amoxicillin) is an antibiotic that is used to treat a wide variety of bacterial infections including skin, respiratory, ear, urinary tract, and eye infections. It is also used to prevent certain types of bacterial infections. Amoxil belongs to the penicillin group of antibiotics and is commonly prescribed to treat bacterial infections.

Common Uses for Amoxil Amoxicillin

Amoxil is commonly used to treat bacterial infections such as:
  • Skin infections, such as boils, abscesses, and cellulitis
  • Respiratory infections, such as bronchitis and pneumonia
  • Ear infections, such as otitis media
  • Urinary tract infections, such as cystitis
  • Eye infections, such as conjunctivitis

Amoxil is also used to prevent certain types of bacterial infections, such as:
  • Pneumonia
  • Meningitis
  • Endocarditis
  • Septicemia

Dosage and Directions for Amoxil Amoxicillin

The usual adult dose of Amoxil is 250 mg 3 times a day or 500 mg twice a day. The usual pediatric dose of Amoxil is 25 mg/kg/day (maximum 500 mg/day) given in divided doses every 8 hours.

Precautions for Amoxil Amoxicillin

Before taking Amoxil, tell your doctor if you are allergic to penicillin or cephalosporin antibiotics such as Ceclor, Ceftin, Duricef, Keflex, and others. Also, tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or if you have kidney disease, liver disease, or a history of intestinal problems.

Contraindications for Amoxil Amoxicillin

Amoxil should not be used in patients with a known hypersensitivity to amoxicillin or other members of the penicillin family.

Possible Side Effects of Amoxil Amoxicillin

Common side effects of Amoxil include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headache, and skin rash. Serious side effects include anaphylaxis, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, and Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea.

Drug Interactions with Amoxil Amoxicillin

Amoxil may interact with other medications, such as blood thinners, other antibiotics, sulfonamides, and tetracyclines. Tell your doctor about all medications you are taking.

Missed Dose of Amoxil Amoxicillin

If you miss a dose of Amoxil, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2 doses at once.

Overdose of Amoxil Amoxicillin

If you overdose on Amoxil, seek medical attention immediately. Symptoms of an Amoxil overdose may include nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.

Storage for Amoxil Amoxicillin

Amoxil should be stored at room temperature away from direct light and moisture. Do not store in the bathroom. Keep all medications away from children and pets.
